Project: Gargoyle

Project Gargoyle was conceived by J. Trent Adams and R. Mark Adams in 1996. The goal was to design and build a Gargoyle Suit that would be comprised of the following components:

  • Portable CPU
  • Hand-held input device (eg. chording keyboard)
  • Video camera
  • Wireless network interface (eg. cellular modem)
  • Output display (eg. head-mounted device or HMD)

We came up with a number of uses for such a system including:

  • On Location Videography / Editing
  • Avatar Communication
  • Remote Video Robot Control

What makes this different than your standard set of portable gear, is that it all has to be wearable. You may be familiar with the term "gargoyle" as refering to a grotesque ornamental statue. What you may not know is that the term has been applied to a growing number of people who are wearing electronic equipment. And when you see pioneers wearing these early prototypes you'll know why they're called "gargoyles."

Since 1996 and an initial prototype we cobbled together using an old laptiop, webcam, and cheap LCD HMD, we've learned quite a lot. Not the least of which is that building such units that are actually useful are extremely expensive (and not to mention time consuming). While our interest in the field has by no means waned, we've chosen to funnel our disposable income and copious free time into other projects (eg. Mark is now married and has two kids while I have... ummm... my fish tank).

For your surfing pleasure, however, we have made available some excellent links on the subject:
