Up until this point, the newly inserted characters of the DS9 episode have not interacted directly with the characters of the original show. The beauty of this scene is that Kirk appears to directly ask a question of O'Brian. In order to accomplish this, the special effects artists had to replace a gold shirt extra with O'Brian. O'Brian and Bashir don't appear to have been shot on a blue stage. The background wall on the left seems to be at a different angle in the DS9 footage. This indicates that the set designers built a section of the room as a background. It may have been easier to simply cut out the entire room around Kirk in this shot and insert O'Brian and Bashir.

Notice, however, that the lighting on O'Brian isn't exactly right. In order to compensate, the artists enhanced the existing shading on Kirk to make it appear as if there is a strong light source on the left. In order to pull this off they added a shadow to Bashir. While looking at Bashir, notice that he is slightly shorter than the man he replaced. This again indicates that there is another background (unless it was digitally inserted).
