In this shot, DS9's Dr. Bashir stands in front of the door when it opens revealing Scotty, Chekov, and an extra. This effect would be most easily achieved with Bashir being shot on a blue stage. Using a specific color background which compositors can isolate from the actor, it is easy to mask out the background and then insert the older footage. The shot was short, but extremely effective.
