An excellent example of blue stage shooting and digital editing, this
seemingly superfulous shot was a lot of fun. Sisco and Dax are seen playing
3D chess as Kirk and Spock enter the cafeteria. The DS9 characters were
shot on a blue stage so that their background could easily be removed for
insertion on top of the original footage. What I noticed immediately was
the uncharacteristic tilt to Sisco's head as he sat across from Dax. Upon
viewing the original footage I realized why: Sisco had to block as much
of the original actor as he could. As it is, though, the digital artists
still had to replace some of the background behind Kirk which was not covered
by Sisco's head. Even more impressive than that, however, is that some
of Kirk's moving legs had to be added (although it was only four frames
worth).
