This sequence was fantasitc. The combination of creative editing and
digital compositing makes it extremely believable. In the original episode,
Kirk looks from right to left and back, surveying the bridge as it is covered
in tribbles. With the inserted Dax, however, the editors cut from this
shot (when Kirk is roughly looking in Dax's direction) to a reaction shot
of Dax shrugging her shoulders. The implying communication really enhances
the believability of the scene.
As to the technical aspect of Dax being inserted, I received a great
email note from Kendrick McPeters which has something interesting to say
about this shot and the subsequent one:
In "Bridge Scene 1.2" you see more of the the top edge of
the Bridge set because the film to video transfers are not the same. Dax
is definately blue screened in... but she's comped into a transfer directly
from the original camera negative, unlike the old episodes in syndication.
And, of course, the framing was different to boot (the standard TV projection
gate has considerable cutoff, compared to the camera).
