With both old footage behind and in front of Bashir, the special effects
artists of DS9 had to create a multibple mask set for this shot. Bashir
was most likely shot on a blue stage and composited on top of the original
footage with a mask of the tribble-filled table composited on top of him
(notice that alothough you can see some fallen tribbles on the ground under
the table that you don't see Bashir's legs). An interesting twist is that
Bashir reaches onto the table and picks up a tribble. You can see the tribble
he grabs in the DS9 frame, it sits a little higher than the other adjacent
tribbles in the original footage. While filming Bashir there must have
been a small pedistal holding up that single tribble at the correct height.
