Notice that the entire background is different in DS9 than in the original.
The angle of the right side support is different and the shadowing of the
molding on the back is a different color entirely. Rather than just inserting
Odo, it was easier to mask out the entire background since they had rebuilt
this K7 set anyway. You will also notice that Odo's table has been inserted
along with the background. This wouldn't be a terribly difficult composite
since the two sources are relatively static. A mask is created which allows
the original actors to be seen while blocking out their background. The
new footage is then placed behind the old and only the new background (including
Odo) which shows through the mask is seen.
The transition from the previous edit to this one was interesting and
extremely believable. Since cutting directly from the previous example
edit to this one would result in a jump cut, there was a reaction shot
of Odo with two stand-ins for Chekov and Uhura passing in front. The stand-ins
were only shown from the waist to the shoulders. The following shot was
of the two of them approaching the bar from the original show, then cutting
to this shot.
